چکیده
Endemic species are those that exist at only one location or area on Earth. They tend to be more numerous in habitats that are distinctly different from the surrounding areas. The Great Sand Dunes harbor at least seven endemic species of insects. Many of the insects here are ‘sand obligates’, meaning that they are adapted uniquely for sandy habitats. Currently, just over 1,000 different kinds of arthropods (insects and spiders) are known to live at the Great Sand Dunes. However, this may represent only about 25% of the total number of arthropods that may exist here. Endemic Insects of the Great Sand Dunes

Large wind shift on the great plains during the medieval warm period.
Spring-summer winds from the south move moist air from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Plains. Rainfall in the growing season sustains prairie grasses that keep large dunes in the Nebraska Sand Hills immobile. Longitudinal dunes built during the Medieval Warm Period (800 to 1000 years before the present) record the last major period of sand mobility. These dunes are oriented NW-SE and are compo...
متن کاملNamib Sand Sea Field Analogues to the Linear Dunes of Titan
Introduction: Sand dunes in Earth’s large deserts are similar in size and relationship to substrate and topography to the tens of thousands of dunes seen on the surface of Titan by Cassini. Field studies of large dunes can thus inform our understanding of the evolution of similar dunes on Titan. A recent field study to the Namib Sand Sea yielded valuable results concerning the morphology, inter...
متن کاملMegadroughts and late Holocene dune activation at the eastern margin of the Great Plains, north-central Kansas, USA
Optical and radiocarbon dating indicates that alluvium underlying dunes near Abilene was deposited at or before 45 ka, and that the overlying dunes were active at 1.1–0.5 ka. Geochemical data indicate that the Abilene dune sand is immature and was derived from the underlying Pleistocene alluvium, and not from Holocene age Smoky Hill River deposits. These findings suggest that dune activation wa...
متن کاملCircular feature among dunes of the great sand sea, egypt.
A circular crater, about 4 kilometers in diameter and located at 24.2 degrees N, 26.4 degrees E, was discovered in Landsat images among the linear dunes of the Great Sand Sea, Egypt. The crater has a sharp and crenulated rim crest, a terraced wall, a discontinuous inner structure (approximately 1.6 kilometers in diameter), and a few rim blocks. Its morphological and morphometric characteristics...
متن کاملHolocene history of the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, Northwestern Alaska
Located just north of the Arctic Circle, the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes (GKSD) are an inland dune field that is closely surrounded by boreal forest. The history of the GKSD tells us about changes in aridity, a climatic parameter whose history is poorly understood at high latitudes. Vegetated dunes in several states of geomorphic preservation surround the active dune field today, evidencing a comple...
